Week 7 SURVEY and Kick Off Week 8... MEDITATION

Hello sweet friends-

I'm baaaack!! How was week seven? Did you gain any new insight by reading the scriptures in a new way or learn anything new about the scriptures themselves? I hope it was a rich and beautiful week and I hope you'll give this week's challenge a chance to be a blessing in your life!

I can't even tell you what a long, emotional, difficult and wonderful week it has been for me! I taught a class on Bringing Light and Clarity into My Life (basically the TREE OF LIFE) at our stake's Women's Conference on Saturday and it went really well even though I wasn't sure how it was all going to come together until I got up there and started talking. The Holy Ghost jumped in and helped me finally know which stories I was supposed to share and what to leave out. It was really neat to see how it all worked out but it took an extremely huge leap of faith to get up there and just start talking. What an incredible opportunity it was to share with others how much the Lord loves all of us!! It was great so see many of you there and get your hugs!!

I have so much I want to share with you today but I will bog you down with too much reading so I am going to write out some things later this week. Now, let's focus on this week's challenge, which is MEDITATION!! We are in very good hands because Camille Smith, a dear friend of mine who is doing the challenge and actually teaches classes on meditation, which I have taken, has written up her thoughts on how to actually do it! It's quite simple as you will see. I just want to tell Camille thank you and let you know how much she has blessed my life. I met her at a political event (sort of) because her husband was running for office and if you know me, I gravitate towards those things... (actually I was helping out and was dressed as Abigail Adams!) anyways we started talking and just hit it off. When Liza died I knew I was in big trouble and had lots of healing to do. I came to Camille's house for a class feeling broken and scared that I might not be able to ever feel solid again. I left feeling more settled and like I had a new tool in my life to help me cope with her death, and any other problem or even to keep me centered. I had learned a few valuable things. One of which was that being still is incredibly rewarding, even necessary. The other is that what goes on in your mind is very important and can be healing if you take the time to do it. Just like anything else, you HAVE TO TRY IT!! Please give this a chance. Baby steps...

Here is Camille:

What is meditation?  Why do we want to do it?  In addition to my regular prayers and scripture study, meditation has been one of the most profound and life changing things I have done to increase my spirituality and to find peace!
If we want to commune with our Heavenly Father, it’s not enough to say our prayers and read.  We have to make time to stop and LISTEN!!  When we create a space in our busy lives for answers and inspiration to show up- they will.

I started out on this path to learn meditation several years ago because I so desperately needed to learn to be still.  I felt like I was running so fast and spinning so many plates that at any moment it would all come crashing down.  I remember having a regular conversation in my head where I would try to figure out how I could possibly accomplish the many things that were on my to do list.  No matter how well I managed my time and tried to stay organized I always came up short!

I came from a family of very busy bees.  My grandpa’s key chain said “Slow me Down, Lord.”  Now my grandpa is gone and that same key chain belongs to my Dad and is very applicable to our family.  Learning a different way of being and slowing down has been a tremendous blessing.  One of my favorite scriptures, “Be still and know that I am God”

If you have never spent any time meditating before and you don’t even know what it is, let me tell you it is SO simple!  Just put everything down, sit on a chair, or the floor, close your eyes and be still.  (turn off your phone or any other distractions first)  When you first try this, your mind may become very busy talking to you and saying things like “What are you doing, this is such a waste of time, you have all these things to do, this is so silly, what is supposed to be happening, am I doing this right?” And a million other thoughts.  This is NORMAL.  It is called busy mind syndrome, but like any skill when you practice being still, this busy mind can learn to subside.

One image that works well for me is to think of your thoughts like a waterfall- endless , never stopping.  (By the way, your thoughts are not you!) You can choose, in your mind’s eye, to step out of the stream of thoughts and choose to have a seat behind the waterfall.  That way you can just watch your thoughts in more of a detached way.  You could even say “Oh there’s that thought again, that’s interesting”  In other words, choose to view your thoughts in a non judgmental way.  Even with a gentle curiosity.  This process, of being still, as you practice regularly will have amazing effects.  Your ability to be calm (despite the circumstances you are in), manage stress, be more discerning and feel closer to your HF will improve!

You don’t have to sit in the lotus position or have any special equipment, only the will to try it and a quiet space.  Playing quiet music can help as you get started although silence is great too.  Don’t wait for the perfect situation or time, practice now- in your car (not while you’re driving please!) or in your bathroom or closet.  I promise the results will astound you!  Have a notebook or journal nearby for those flashes of inspiration.  Good luck!  Email me if you have any questions.  camillebstill@cox.net.

If anyone else likes meditating and has other thoughts or advice for the group early in the week, before the survey, please send them to me and I will send them out. This goes for all our challenges etc. If you ever have any inspiration or encouragement, you don't have to wait for the Survey. Speaking of Surveys, HERE IT IS!!

I love you so much! Your friendship means the world to me!! Have a great week and remember we are doing this to feel more of God's love that is already out there, not to try and be worthy of his love. He already loves us just the way we are! We are just planting the seeds in our hearts and seeing what grows and what helps us feel that love and what helps us see ourselves as he sees us! Pretty important stuff but it is for YOU to be HAPPY!!! Not stressed or angry that you aren't perfect! I have not done well with the exercise part of this challenge, like I thought I would, but other parts have been incredibly helpful and powerful and that's the idea! See what works and take it a step at a time. And love yourself along the way!!

Lots of love!

Scritpure Cheerleading!! Rah rah rah!

Here is some scriptural cheerleading from my one and only big sister, Maryjane Wilson!

I have been listening to a radio series recently on the Mormon Channel called "Enduring it Well".  One particular episode is an interview of a middle-aged woman who knows she is quickly approaching death because of cancer.  She is full of faith, and tells of the things she is doing to prepare for passing on.  She talked about how she was writing letters to her children to not only express her love for them and testimony of the gospel, but to tell them her thoughts on a variety of topics they were likely to encounter later in life.  For example, she included letters to help them when they picked someone to marry, when they when through difficulties in their marriage, and when they struggled to raise their children.  "What a great idea!" I thought.  Then I pondered how that's what Heavenly Father did for us in the scriptures.  He has inspired prophets, modern and ancient, to write his words in order to help us with the problems He knows we are likely to encounter during this life.

Maybe you can think of the scriptures this week as letters that Heavenly Father has had written for YOU!  One way I love to read the scriptures is FAST.  My mission president had us read the Book of Mormon all the way through every 2 months on my mission.  Then once he told us he wanted us to read it twice that fast, and finish in one month.  He also asked us to memorize what was in each chapter of the Book of Mormon.  I thought I could never do it, but I made up flashcards as I read, and was able to reach my goal.  It was surprising to me how all of the stories and names and people began clicking and made more sense when I read it that way...like a great novel.  Of course there is also great value in reading it slowly:) Variety IS the spice of life.  SO, consider speeding up your reading if you typically read slowly, or slow down your reading if you already read the scriptures at a rapid pace.

The scriptures are our tools for this life.  We just choose whether or not to pick them up and use them.

Enjoy your letters from Father this week!

Maryjane Wilson

Thanks so much Maryjane!! Great insight! (I taught her everything she knows! HAHA!)

Week 6 RESULTS!!

Friends-
Sorry soooo late!!! Ok- I've been working hard on my lesson for this Saturday. Our stake is having a women's conference and I am teaching a class on "Bringing Light and Clarity into My Life" and you are welcome to come if you'd like! Though you might hear some things from this challenge! Haha! You might even hear some of your own comments!! :) But there are some great other classes too! It's from 9am-1:30 pm at the LDS church on Elliot and Lindsay in Gilbert. We each teach 3 times, at 9:35, 10:05 and 10:35 and then there is lunch and a musical presentation. Hope to see you there if you can fit it in. No pressure!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is your scripture study going? Did I mention that you can also read conference talks or any of the teachings of the prophets? They are all scripture!! I hope you are gaining a testimony of the word of God!

Don't forget to look at some beautiful art this week and get 5 more points!

Thanks so much for all your wonderful comments and insight! What fun to read these beautiful words!! I am loving it!!

I MESSED UP SOMETHING... I accidentally deleted some of your names in the google doc that the survey makes and you CAN'T UNDO anything with those forms!!! ARG!! Some of your names didn't get deleted and some I could figure out (I knew Jennie was going to Grand Canyon etc.) But others I don't have a name next to! Could you please email me back and let me know which quote(s) belong to you? THANKS and SORRRRRYYYY!!!!

Week 6 Ah ha moments

I spent lots of time preparing for a lesson today on grace. I love that in addition to being saved by grace, we are being changed by grace. Every day. In small little ways. A tree starts from a seed. And it is shaped and changed by its potential and its circumstances. So are we. We choose whether our circumstances will change us to be more like Christ or less like Him. – Jennie Blaser

Thoughts on Music:

When Lucie past, I was in a very raw place. Never in my life had music felt the way it did now. If it was beautiful music, it immediately brought me to tears, no crying. Music reached so deep in my soul that I gained an undeniable testimony that it was part of our Heavenly Fathers language. That sensitivity has since wore off some, as I have been able to journey to a more joyful state. Still I will never forget that tender mercy of feeling my Savoir through music! – Shauna Gallman

We took our kids to the Grand Canyon this week. On the drive back, instead of having them watch a movie, I thought about the music challenge and said, "let's play name that tune". I plugged in my phone and hit shuffle. For hours we guessed each song, sang along with some favorites, just listened in silence to some of the more peaceful ones, etc. it was so fun!! And, I'm happy to say there weren't any songs I felt were not appropriate for everyone to hear! – Jennie Blaser

I love music & so I'm constantly surrounded by music.  It's ability to lift us & allow the Spirit to talk to our Spirit is endless.  I'm grateful for those who have the talent to write beautiful music & for those gifted to sing. - Tava Udall

Thoughts on mystery challenge: Look in the Mirror and SMILE! Remind yourself who you really are!!

As weird as it might sound - "Looking" at myself in the mirror was kind of strange cause you really don't "look" at yourself. You always "look" at your hair, at your clothes or at your skin - but not at "yourself".  After the awkwardness wore off - hearing the words "I am a child of God and I am loved" was like getting a big hug. I Loved It!- ??? Janell?

I kept forgetting! But I did it several times! One night, I had some horrible dream and woke up sweating and feeling panicked. I just laid there in bed and whispered "I am a daughter of God. He loves me." Over and over and it helped so much! No mirror required! – Jennie Blaser

I found that I brushed my teeth longer more thoroughly. And I LOOKED at me.  It was unique and sometimes disconcerting yet powerful too. I am going to continue to do this. - Hillarie Miller

I am handsome.  just kidding.   No matter what we do...God sees our true self and knows our potential.  – Dan Brimhall

What do you think is the most important thing you have learned so far on this challenge?

I think I am still learning - Don't get so caught up in life that you let the important things fall through the cracks or get left undone.  I love the weekly reminders. - ???

I just love how so many different aspects of life  (ie the focus each week) can each help us to become better. Some will be easier and that's ok! – Jennie Blaser

I have been reminded that parts of my life are too cluttered.  I made a conscious effort (about a week ago after your encouragement, and after re-reading Cindy Seipert's piece) to get serious and change some of my habits--to simplify my life.  I know it will take a little time, but it is working and I feel hope.  I updated my "vision board" to include statements that will bring more order to my home, and especially to reduce the stacks of papers lying around.  Phrases that stood out to me were, "Give it everything you've got," and "Give your home a workout."  I don't know quite how to not attach emotional significance to things, but I feel it will come.  I need to get started.  Part of my plan is this:  My home workout is MWF for a half hour, while my body workout is TuThSat for a half hour:)  The home workout has a high priority.  I know God will help me and Kent will too. – Mary Anne Koski

Many times I have been reminded of the goodness of others. This goodness takes me outside of myself and helps me see what I can do for others.  This is cyclical and brings more good.  Very powerful.  - Hillarie Miller

That God is good, Heavenly Father is EVERYWHERE we just have to be Intune with the Spirit to notice ALL that He is & then implement Him into our daily lives.  God will forever be our Friend, advocate & counselor. He will put Angels (friends, loved ones) in our lives to help us along the way. We are Never alone!! - Tava Udall

Sarah! I'm back! I felt so overwhelmed the past few weeks that I stopped working on this challenge. I just felt prompted to read this email though and it touched me. I loved and admired Trudy so very much and wanted to be just like her! She was my yw leader and then I worked very closely with her for months leading up to Retreat for Girls(RFG). I remember coming home from RFG to find out Trudy had crashed and been killed on her way home from our week together and feeling so sad that someone so amazing and who I loved so much was gone. Reading your email just now was the reminder I needed of what made Trudy such an incredible example.....her love of God & her obedience in reading her scriptures daily. I'm starting today and I may not do so well in the other aspects of this challenge, but I am going to be 100% with my scripture study so I can be like Trudy (& you now! ) and always have his spirit to guide my life!
Thank you Sarah!! Love you! – Randa Canter

I really had fun making new questions on the survey. They weren't terribly creative but it was fun to shake it up! Here are your answers...

Mystery Challenge!! (btw- my mom didn't give me this idea! Oops!) Spend a little time looking at works of art by famous artists, or your favorite artists. You don't have to go to a museum or anything (but that would be great!) just search for an artist or types of art online. Please share any special ones you find! Have fun!

Week 6 SURVEY and Week 7 KICK-OFF!!

Well, hello ladies and gentlemen!

We are over half way there!! How was your week of listening to music? I really hope you gave it a try! I am excited to hear from you all! I can't even describe how much music impacted my week. I listened to the awesome Spotify list Tava made us, and the beautiful music on the Mormon Channel at work all day long, and at home for hours and I felt the Spirit so much stronger all week long!! What a blessing, especially on a really busy, frustrating week at work. Music really soothed my soul!! I hope it was wonderful to you too. I am definitely going to act like every week is music week from now on. I hope you had fun reminding yourself in the mirror, that you are a beloved child of God too!! That was hard for me to remember but when i did it, it felt great!

Ok- this week is FOCUS ON THE SCRIPTURES week. Think about Lehi's dream and what led to the tree? The WORD of God! The scriptures! We need to hold onto them steadfastly! Christ himself is also "The Word" and he will guide us to the tree. He is the tree too. He's pretty much everything! Here are my thoughts and my testimony of the importance of the scriptures...

There are not enough exclamation points in the world to let you know how important it is to read your scriptures every day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If there is only one thing you do during this challenge, besides PRAY to feel God’s love for you and to know who you are in His eyes, it is to read, study, and feast upon the scriptures!!! The scriptures, and all the words of the current prophets and apostles, are like an instruction manual on how to have peace in this life and eternal glory in the world to come! They are real, tangible, instructions, information, love, peace, light, help, and enlightenment in the palm of our hands. We can download them to our phones and read them any time and any place!! We are so blessed! We can pray to him any time about anything and then we can open our scriptures and see what he has to say to us! What a blessing!!

MY STORY! This is what I wrote in my journal on Oct. 25th 2003, about how my love of the scriptures developed and what it did for my life...

“On Sept. 1st  this year, 2003, my life began to change. It was the day I finally listened to the prophet and really started reading the Book of Mormon. The day before, during church, President Morgan had challenged us to get our degree from the Preparedness University [a fun program our stake did to help us live the gospel more fully] and gave us a list of what to do. He said “this list is not just for our degree but these are the things we need to do to bring us and our families to Eternal Life." That really struck me, how nice.. a “to do” list.

Then after church my visiting teaching companion [and dear friend], Trudy Barrett and I were visiting Heather Nava. She [Heather] was moving 3 days later to be near her husband from whom she was separated and to see what they should do. Trudy told her she had made it through the toughest times in her life by reading the scriptures ½ hour every day. [Trudy had been abused as a child yet she was one of the sweetest, happiest, most genuinely loving people I had ever known] She said it brought her great joy! When she said that I thought to myself, “I could use that, I struggle, I could use more joy.” [at the time I was struggling pretty seriously with bulimia].  So because of those two reasons I began personal scripture study and family scripture study. ½ hour on my own, starting in Alma and read about 2 pages with the family each morning, (starting in 1st Nephi Ch. 20).

An unexpected and amazing flood of events continued from there.
That next week I felt so alive, so happy, so aware of the Lord. The more I read the more I was amazed by what was written in the scriptures. It was like I had never heard it before. These stories were amazing and I wanted to be just like Captain Moroni. I prayed before I read, I didn’t want to waste my ½ hour so I prayed to understand it, to know what I should be learning from it and to know that it was true. Over the last 55 days I have gained such a strong testimony and learned so much.”

And that was just the beginning of a major healing process for me that changed my life forever and it was just that one thing that I changed to start with. The closeness to the Spirit, my new relationship with God and my Savior led me where I needed to go and I was healed.  Trudy Barrett helped me so much with that process, not just in her inspired encouragement to turn to the Book of Mormon for healing, but she also listened as I talked to her for hours about my problem and she gave me much needed comfort and encouragement. She even told me just to ask Heavenly Father if he could heal me... and he did!

A year and a half later, on the evening of June 30, 2005, Trudy, who was only 29 years-old, was killed in a single car accident in Utah. The next day our neighbors, the Gwilliams, knocked on our front door and told us of the terrible tragedy. I was so stunned, I couldn’t even cry. I just walked upstairs to my room and found my precious Book of Mormon, and sat on my carpet in a pool of warm sunshine and read Jacob chapter 5, the longest and perhaps most beautiful chapter in the Book of Mormon.

It brought me such solace and comfort to read that day and to know that Trudy was with God, with the Savior whom she loved so deeply. I imagined her walking around heaven trying to find and introduce herself to Captain Moroni, Nephi, Alma and all the other incredible leaders in the Book of Mormon that she admired.  I can’t wait to see her again and thank her for all that she did for me. For sharing her strength with me and telling me (even though she was really telling Heather) where I could turn for healing and for drastically changing the direction of my life forever. She even gave me a big present when I told her I was completely healed from the eating disorder. She said, "This is a huge deal! You deserve a gift!" She framed the words of a song that she knew I had a very special spiritual experience listening to; the Michael McLean song, "Will He Really Answer Me?" and I still have that hanging on my bedroom wall. She wanted me to always remember that He heard me and He answered! What a sweet friend.

Even if you aren’t struggling with an eating disorder like I was, we live in a fallen world and being separated from God is kind of like being ill with a sickness and the scriptures are like medicine. We need a little each day to feel better! It builds our relationship with God, Christ and the Spirit, and the more I study them the more I feel like I have a little fortress of protection around me.

SCRIPTURE POINTS: This week give yourself points for putting EXTRA time and effort into your scripture study. Please think about implementing any of these ideas to change up and enrich your scripture study…
-       Read for 30 minutes. Don’t race through pages, just set an amount of time and absorb the meaning of what you are reading during that time.
-       Have a colored pencil with you every time you read and color any word or phrase that catches your attention, that you want to be able to find later.
-       Write in the margins of your scriptures so you can remember how particular scriptures relate to you in your life, or any inspiration that comes to you while reading.
-       If you always read your scriptures, try listening to them instead. You can listen to all of the scriptures online at http://classic.mormonchannel.org/scriptures You can get new insight and make your learning more interesting (and sometimes more convenient) by hearing someone read you the words. Just hearing a different voice besides my own and different emphasis makes listening to the scriptures a new learning experience.
-       If you usually read them from an electronic device, go get your paper copies for a change. Reading the words and having them in ink and paper in your hands, has  a special feeling. And being able to highlight and write notes on the pages is pretty great!
-       If you usually read from paper copies, try and read from an electronic device. Being able to follow any footnote link, or get more clarity from the Bible dictionary with just the tap of your finger is so fun! It’s so fun to follow a train of thought through many different books and it’s so easy on a device. I love digitally highlighting things, or making my own cross-references too!
-       Instead of just reading from front to back, try studying a certain topic instead. See what the scriptures have to say about faith, or grace, or parenting. This is really easy to do these days with electronic scriptures but you can also do this the old fashioned way as well. It will enrich your learning.
-       Keep your little notebook near you when you read and record a few thoughts on what you learned.
-       Say a prayer before you start to read, that you will know what God wants to teach you from the scriptures that day. Then when you finish reading, pray again and tell him what you think you learned and ask him if that is right. (This is what Elder Richard G. Scott recommends to receive personal revelation from the scriptures).
-       Read the scriptures together as a family.
-       Read your scriptures where your children can see you! They need to know where you get your strength from.
-       Leave your scriptures open out on the table or counter after you are done reading them. They have a healing affect. I heard Tad Callister (a general authority) and his wife interviewed on the Mormon Channel and his wife said that the scriptures have such healing power that she leaves them open on her table during the day after she finishes reading them. I’ve done this as well and that’s another good reason to have paper copies.

When you are reading remember that you are basically reading someone’s journal. These are the most important things that the prophets of their times thought that their people should know and that all people throughout time needed to know. That’s why they were written down and preserved. Precious information!!

Ok- Time to get going! Enjoy the NEW SURVEY below! I changed all of the questions! I hope you like them and that we get some great feedback. Thanks so much for sticking with this! I love you all dearly!!!

Here is the link for the song "Will He Really Answer Me." It's another 80's classic that I have on CD still. (It's not by Janice Kapp Perry like the video says).

Lots of love!

WEEK 5 RESULTS!

Hey there pals!

I just loved reading all of your experiences and encouragement for each other. Thanks so much for sharing yourselves with us. Week 5 was such a blessing to so many lives and such a success! It was so neat to read about all of your experiences and how the ancestor challenge and temple challenge went well together!

24 of you took the survey! Thank you! Thanks to all who read these emails and who are still finding ways to search for that tree of life. I hope that you are really feeling closer to the Savior, and our Father in Heaven and the Holy Ghost. I pray that this is brining you peace in your crazy busy lives. Please keep hanging in there! Great job earning points and blessings. You amaze me!!

WEEK 5 “Ah ha” moments

I'm excited about his weeks challenge as Music is the universal language & is the only language that speaks to our soul. I have been blessed, inspired, motivated throughout my life with music & I'm excited for this week. – Tava Udall

Sarah's encouraging email of last week to become "that" person has helped me. I re-read Cindy Seipert's suggestions on decluttering and getting more peace in our lives, and saw what will help me. Thanks to you both. Mary Anne Koski

I randomly ran into my cousins' husband at the grocery store & we chatted for a few minutes. He asked me questions about my current situation & I was telling him how, as a single Mom, it's been a difficult decision for me to not get a full-time job while my daughter is still so young. I've had to be creative in my effort to stay at home with her as much as possible while still earning a living. His kind response really touched me. He said, "Well, I KNOW that Grandma Mary Hatch Brimhall (my sweet great-grandma, the mother of 13, whom I never got to meet) would approve of your decision. I'm SURE she's proud of your choice and is helping you out with this one." The Spirit testified that this is true. She IS proud of me and she IS helping me out on this one. I've thought about those words quite a few times this week and they make me smile. – Janell DeWitt

I think the more you learn of your past, the more kind you want to be to others, they could be your long lost cousin. – Cindy Sorenson

What has helped YOU do hard things, or survive hard trials?

Heavenly Father is compassionate. The Savior is compassionate and empathetic and kind. We need to become like them in order to feel at home and choose Heaven and be Heavenly. Those attributes are the exact opposite of the natural man inside all of us. So, Heavenly Father will give us trials to teach us compassion and empathy and kindness. How can we be compassionate if we don't know sorrow and pain? We could only say kind words and do kind things to help others, we couldn't BE compassionate (which, dividing up the latin roots means with feeling) unless we have already felt the sorry and pain and hurt from whatever trials and tests we have gone through. And we don't even have to have gone through the same trial to be compassionate. So, if you are in the middle of something terribly difficult, tell yourself, "The Lord needs as many compassionate people as He can get. He's going to get me. And this is the way He can do it." – Jennie Blaser

I have found that when my pain is intense and the wound deepest, that there is the greatest opportunity for our Lord's grace. His hand is extended toward us in love and we have a crucial choice, to take it or turn away. It sometimes takes great courage to grasp His outstretched hand. His love is perfect.- Cindy Seipert

My Mom & Dad are my inspiration & example of two people who have been through so much from arriving from England with $450 yet through perseverance, hardwork & mental tenacity of never giving up built the American Dream, gave me a childhood & a work ethic that is unparalleled in today's world, fell on hard times, lost almost everything they had & yet they have never given up, they still wake up every morning with smiles on their faces ready to greet the day with postive energy & love life. Truly my inspiration to never give up, never quit & to always thank God for everything you have.- Tava Udall

I know there is a God. Mary Anne Koski

I have a new saying that I borrowed from "Come Come Ye Saints". It is "Fresh Courage Take!" Some days require a new round of courage to face things I've not faced before. I'm thankful for ancestors who faced each day with courage also.- Lachelle Hull

Prayer! I honestly don't know how many times pouring my heart out to the lord has helped me too many be able to survive a trial or hard time and knowledge of the atonement that I don't ever walk this journey alone! – Jessica Despain

The best thing I can do to survive hard trials is to Keep an Eternal Perspective. Life is really hard sometimes, but I have to remember that it'll be worth it in the end. Heavenly Father has never let me down before. In fact, He always come through for me in Awesome ways! ...so I have to keep that in mind when I'm enduring a particularly difficult trial. I know I can trust Him, so I just need to continue to prove that He can trust me.- Janell DeWitt

All the things that we are doing with this certainly help but I found that weekly temple attendance regardless of what you are doing, even just going to the temple grounds and sitting helps to bring that comfort that things will work out. I have made it a goal to take my children to do baptism once a month and so far they are really enjoying that experience. I have been able to have some really good discussion with my children about the blessing of temple attendance and why it is so important and we are starting to help find family names to take to the temple.- Dan Brimhall

Thoughts on LEARNING ABOUT OUR ANCESTORS:

I took the opportunity to learn more about Mary Ann Tracey Shepherd, the great, great grandmother I was named after. Well, that is according to my father. According to my mother I was named after Mary Anne Swenson, the daughter of my mother's dear friend. That in itself is sort of a funny story, and also a sweet one. But I've always focused on the Mary Anne with the "e," so this was enlightening to me. March 7 was Mary Ann's 166th anniversary of being baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in England. Cool. She faced the challenges of being poor with a large family to feed, in ways I have not experienced. I am impressed. I did learn that we both have experienced living around wild blackberry bushes! And yes, I do feel closer to her. Mary Anne Koski

I loved learning and relearning stories about my ancestors. What impacted me the most was that so many of them lost young children and infants (so much more common in those days), but nonetheless, very painful! Ten years ago this coming July, my sweet little Katie Irene passed away. She only lived a couple of days, but I felt an instant deep love for her when she was born and I heard her sweet, but faint cry, and saw her little face all bundled up in a soft blanket. Such a precious daughter of God!
I couldn't help but feel sorrow for the trials my ancestors went through, but felt a definite connection to them as it pertained to losing a child. I got the impression that when I was going through my loss, my ancestors were near and felt a connection to me. After reading about them, I was reminded that Katie is with all those amazing people now! What a comfort that is to know she is among such stalwart men and women.

One of my ancestors broke her leg and it never healed causing her a great deal of pain. One day a man showed up at their house and asked her parents why their girl was in so much pain. After explaining why, this man stated that it hadn't been set right after it was broken and that he needed to break it again and reset it; and they allowed him to do it. They said that almost immediately after it was set correctly, their daughter wasn't in pain. They were overjoyed. They turned to thank him, but he was gone. They ran out of the house to find him, but he wasn't anywhere to be seen. They lived on a farm out in the boonies, and said no one could have left that quickly and not be seen from their house. They guessed at the time that one of the three Nephites did it. Lately, I have been reading a lot of stories about Angels and I wouldn't be surprised if they were right, or if not, that it was definitely an angel! We are so much more connected to those beyond the veil than we realize. :) – Janet Seto

I was reminded who my grandparents really are by reading their journals, stories from their youth and memories of them from my cousins. I felt like they were close by. – Sarah Crawford

This week I accompanied my wife, Tawna, to the funeral of her uncle Harold - the last of 13 children. One of his children told about things his father accomplished during his life. One thing that stuck out was that uncle Harold invented the mechanism that would raise and lower the podium in their chapel. He went on to patten the design. Years later the LDS church called and wanted to buy the design to put it on the podium in the tabernacle. He gladly donated it to the church and they used it in more buildings than just the tabernacle. – Dave Petersen

I do have a great love for family history. I gained a greater appreciation for the hard work and sacrifice that they went thru, which blessed them, their children and their descendants (me). – Cindy Soresen

Ever since I was a young girl, I have always felt that I can never disappoint my ancestors, so I must always try to live a life that is close to the Lord and the gospel – one that they will be proud of and allow me to be with them again. This week I thought a lot about my heritage. I have many ancestors who dedicated their lives to the Lord, and sacrificed so much. I feel in debt to them for their stalwart lives. I studied journals of my grandfather who I never personally knew in this life. He died when my mom was only 10 years old, but he is such an amazing example to me. He was only five feet six inches tall, but was larger than life, and had a magnetic personality. He accomplished so very much in his short life, but his greatest accomplishment was his family and dedication to the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was wonderful to read his testimony. Makes me want to do and be better, and I hope I can live a pattern of his life, so that those who follow me, will feel the same way. – Spring Thibaudeau

For my children I read from Kathy's journal about our dating, breaking up, dating, engagement, etc. Although it was very emotional for me so very important for them to know their mother better and how much she absolutely was crazy in love with their dad. For myself I read stories from my ancestors and had them do their four generations and ask their grandparents about their parents first hand. It was a great experience. – Dan Brimhall

How was your TEMPLE EXPERIENCE?

I went back to the Gilbert Temple where I work every Wednesday. Normally, we have 1-2 stake volunteers which are different each week. We normally visit with them and get to learn all about them. But, no volunteers showed up this week, so we didn't have the typical surface get to know you chats, and ended up having great and deeper discussions with the people I get to work with each week. Loved it. The Gilbert Temple will always be such a special place to me. On Mar. 1st, 2014, I got to meet President Monson in the temple presidents' office and he visited with my little family and then gave me a blessing. I don't share that with many people, so don't share it with the whole group, but it was so neat to be back in there almost a year to the date and reminiscing on that special moment.- Jennie Blaser

Loved this challenge because I didn't even remember it was the Mystery Challenge til I was reminded after I attended the NewPort Temple with my beautiful daughter. It was a beautiful day & it means so much to have her sitting by my side & getting to be in the celestial room seeing a little piece of heaven here on earth. We met a very sweet sister who joined us for a yummy lunch at this cute little bakery. It was fun making a new friend. It's amazing what happens when you just reach out, smile & say Hi. She even offered to take a few pictures of us at the Temple to capture he memory...super sweet. – Tava Udall

Yesterday, I gave the lesson in relief society on repentance. While in the temple this week, I was inspired to read the Bible dictionary on repentance. It beautifully explains how we need to overcome the natural man and there's no way around it. It's wonderful how the Savior makes that possible through His Atonement. My stake president gave a fantastic talk about repentance a few years back. I remember a quote he shared, "Repentance… A gift I GET to use to become what He knows I can become with His help." I am thankful that when I go to the temple, Heavenly Father gives me the insights I need to change and become what He sees me as and knows I can become. – Lachelle Hull

Loved the challenge. I wasn't feeling the best and normally wouldn't have gone, but so glad I did. Seattle is gorgeous this time of year and we had to cross over Lake Washington on our way as the morning sun was rising. It was breathtaking. My husband and I were asked to be the witness couple. :) We both had a few new "Ah ha" moments that we were able to share after our time there. Thanks for the encouragement to go! – Janet Seto

Every time I go to the temple, it is an experience. I went to the Gilbert temple. I went alone and appreciated that communion with my Father. I love that the spirit and reverence is there even just walking the grounds of the temple, a true sanctuary.- Spring Thibaudeau

I went to the temple Tuesday, the day before I got sick. Boy am I glad for the mystery challenge. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have made it there:) – Maryjane Wilson

I go to the temple twice a week for sealings on Fridays and endowments on Saturday all with family names and it wonderful so connected and more focused on those things that are important. I always find peace and comfort and feel the presence of Kathy. – Dan Brimhall
